Whether you're strapping on skis for the first time or you're an experienced rider looking to polish your technique, lessons can transform your Hakuba experience. They're an obvious choice for beginners who want to build confidence and learn proper fundamentals, but don't overlook their value if you're at an intermediate or advanced level. Maybe it's been a few years since your last mountain trip, or perhaps you're ready to tackle moguls, improve your powder technique, or finally master those carved turns. A good instructor can identify and fix bad habits you didn't know you had, opening up new terrain and making the whole mountain more enjoyable.
Ski instructors teaching young children
Hakuba has numerous ski schools to choose from, but we consistently recommend three providers that our guests have had excellent experiences with, each offering something slightly different depending on your needs and preferences.

Evergreen Ski School instructors
Evergreen International Ski School
Evergreen International Ski School is the largest and most established operation, conveniently based at the Kokusai slope on Happo, which happens to be the closest mountain to Starfall Lodge. As the biggest school in the valley, they have the resources to offer comprehensive programs for everyone. Their private lessons give you personalized attention at any skill level, while their group adult lessons are perfect for meeting other riders while improving your skills. For families, they run kids' group lessons split into two age brackets: 3 to 6 years old for the little ones just starting out, and 7 to 14 for more independent young riders. Both ski and snowboard instruction are available at all levels, with half day or full day options to suit your schedule. Their instructors come from around the world and speak a variety of languages, so communication is rarely an issue. You can book directly through their website at evergreen-skischool.com.

Hakuba Snow Sports School
For a more intimate experience, Hakuba Snow Sports School operates from the Iimori slope on Goryu. This smaller operation has built a loyal following thanks to their team of repeat instructors who know Hakuba's terrain inside and out. They offer adult group lessons for all abilities, plus dedicated kids' programs for skiing (ages 5 to 12) and snowboarding (ages 7 to 12). Like Evergreen, they provide both half day and full day group sessions. Where they really stand out is their private lesson offerings, which include a unique nighttime option taking advantage of Goryu's illuminated slopes. These evening sessions include pickup and dropoff from your accommodation, making them perfect for squeezing in extra instruction after a day of exploring on your own. Check availability and make bookings at hakubasnowsports.com.

Hakuba SKI CONCIERGE
If you're looking for a more upmarket experience and don't mind paying premium prices, Hakuba Ski Concierge specializes in high end private instruction. All their lessons include pickup and dropoff from Starfall Lodge, eliminating any transportation hassles. You can choose your preferred resort from any mountain in the valley except Happo, giving you flexibility to explore different terrain with your instructor. They offer both half day and full day sessions, and their instructors tend to be very experienced locals with deep knowledge of Hakuba's mountains. This makes them an particularly good choice for groups of experienced riders who want technical pointers while also discovering the best hidden powder stashes, tree runs, and off piste areas that only locals know about. Their premium service is reflected in the price, but for those who value convenience and insider knowledge, it's worth the investment. Visit their website to arrange your lesson at hakubaskiconcierge.com.

Booking ahead is essential for private lessons with any provider, as the best instructors get snapped up quickly, especially during peak weeks. Group lessons have a bit more availability, but we still strongly recommend reserving your spot in advance to avoid disappointment. Nothing's worse than being ready to learn only to find all the classes are full. Most schools allow free cancellation with enough notice, so there's little downside to booking early.

Getting to your lesson couldn't be easier from Starfall Lodge. Our morning shuttle service stops at both the Kokusai slope for Evergreen lessons and the Iimori slope for Hakuba Snow Sports School. Just let our team know where you need to go when you hop on the shuttle, and we'll make sure you arrive with plenty of time to get sorted before your lesson begins.

The mountains of Hakuba offer incredible terrain for every level of rider, but having an expert guide you through the learning process can accelerate your progress dramatically. Whether you're taking your first tentative slides on the bunny slope or perfecting your technique in the back bowls, the right instructor can make all the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one.
